The UV index, which indicates the strength of the ultraviolet radiation that can cause sunburn, can help you assess your own sunburn risk and protect yourself accordingly. Sunburn hazard The UVI is currently four in almost all of Germany. The Internet portal "Haut.de", which cooperates with the working group on aesthetic dermatology and cosmetology, indicates that people with skin type II get sunburnt skin after about 30 minutes in the sun at such a value. With lighter types, the time is even shorter. According to the portal, sunburn is possible with UVI values ​​between five and seven for the same skin type from just 20 minutes. And with values ​​above this, sunburn can occur in less than 20 minutes.

Observe the rule of thumb for the sun protection factor The BfS recommends protecting yourself from the sun from a UVI of three. For example, it is better to spend the midday hours in the shade and lotion in the sun. According to a rule of thumb, the sun protection factor (SPF) should be at least twice the UVI - at least SPF eight to ten these days. It is also important to wear a hat and appropriate clothing. According to dermatologists, textiles for sunburn protection are more important than sunscreens. Prevention is also important because every sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer. Even if the chances of a cure are very good, this should not lead to carelessness.

App calculates individual sunburn risk An app can provide further help in assessing your own sunburn risk. The UV check was developed by the Professional Association of German Dermatologists (BVDD) together with the German Aerospace Center. The user has to activate the location service of his mobile phone and, among other things, enter whether it is cloudy, at what height he is and what type of skin he has. Then the app calculates the so-called UV protection time of the user.

Well-tried home remedies for sunburns If an emergency does occur, the affected skin should first be cooled well. Home remedies such as moist envelopes can help here. Curd cheese, yoghurt, aloe vera or healing earth are other tried and tested home remedies for sunburn. If there are severe symptoms, the doctor will prescribe ointments containing cortisone for relief in some cases. You should definitely see a doctor if blisters form on the skin, the skin is dark red, and symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, fever, chills, headache and drowsiness occur.
