Old health insurance cards lose their validity at the end of the year

The old health insurance card expires at the turn of the year. This was announced by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV), the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists (KZBV) and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds on Friday. Accordingly, from January 1, 2015, only the new electronic health card will be valid as proof of the entitlement to be able to benefit from statutory health insurance benefits.

Doctors can still invoice services using the old health insurance card until the end of the year. The old health insurance card can therefore still be used in doctor's offices until the end of this year. After that, it loses its validity, regardless of the date printed on the card. “It is good for everyone involved that there is finally clarity. It was particularly important to us that the doctors have the security of being able to use the ‘old’ health insurance card in the fourth quarter of this year as well, ”said KBV CEO Dr. Andreas Gassen.

Thanks to a temporary solution, the resident doctors can still bill their services using the old card until December 31, 2014. "The agreed date and the clear regulation at the end of the validity of the health insurance card create the necessary planning security that is required for the further implementation of this ambitious project," emphasized Dr. Wolfgang Eßer, chairman of the board of the KZBV.

Dr. Doris Pfeiffer, CEO of the GKV umbrella association, welcomes the agreement: "With the understanding found, health insurance companies, doctors and dentists have taken an important step together on the path to the telematics infrastructure."

Exchange of the old health insurance card has stalled At the beginning of July this year, six to eight percent of the insured did not yet have the new health card because they had still not applied for it or had not sent in a suitable photo. Originally, the old health insurance card should expire at the end of September. However, this deadline could not be met because the exchange of cards had stalled.

The electronic health card is intended to improve data exchange between doctors, hospitals and pharmacies in the future, so that drug interactions, for example, can be avoided in advance. Critics and data protectors, however, complain that the sensitive data is not adequately protected. (ag)
