Selenium can increase the risk of prostate cancer. Food supplements with vitamins and trace elements have been in vogue for years. As studies show, it can also damage your health enormously. Already six years ago, the US National Cancer Institute caused a sensation with the study "Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trail" (SELECT), when it showed that taking vitamin E did not have any benefits, but on the contrary increased the risk of cancer. The results of a current follow-up study are no less alarming. Accordingly, even high doses of selenium can increase the risk of prostate cancer. Apparently there are also complex cancer-promoting interactions between vitamin E and selenium.

We strongly advise against uncontrolled intake "The current study clearly shows us the dangers of an uncontrolled intake of vitamin E and selenium. Both are contained in dietary supplements that can be bought in any supermarket and, in the worst case, can lead to the disease of fatal prostate cancer, ”warned Kurt Widhalm, President of the Austrian Academic Institute for Nutritional Medicine (ÖAIE), according to a press report. The ÖAIE therefore strongly advises against the uncontrolled intake of apparently harmless food supplements. "You should generally be careful with taking all supplements over a long period of time," says Widhalm.

Many seniors take too many dietary supplements A few months ago, the director of the Institute for Epidemiology II at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU), Professor Dr. Annette Peters that so far "current and population-based data on taking supplements in older people" have been largely lacking for Europe. Nevertheless, many seniors would swallow too many of these remedies. Fifty-four percent of women and 34 percent of men over the age of 64 would therefore take supplemental vitamins, minerals or other additives in order to prevent a vitamin or magnesium deficiency or to protect themselves from illnesses. Even if, according to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), those in need of long-term care in particular often lack calcium, vitamin D, vitamin E, folic acid and fiber, the supply of nutrients with whole grains, vegetables and fruit could be improved.
